Gastric Banding

A recent study of Medicare beneficiaries that received a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, published in JAMA , found that of 25,042 patients – 18.5% underwent 17,539 reoperations, or an average of 3.8 procedures per patient. This equated to Medicare payments of $224 million for the reoperations.

If you are still offering the adjustable gastric band procedure – ensure that you are fully informing patients of the high incidence of reoperation and likely expense, as well as the difference in weight loss outcomes associated with this procedure.
